Artist Statement:
My work critically explores and pays homage to the traditional Chinese family idea. Engaging with this dichotomy of control and constraint, a yearning to escape these culturally traditional roles of family while still reflecting on the power and importance of family traditions.
Centred on drawing I utilise material layering including fabrics, Oracle bone inscriptions, metal inscriptions, bamboo slips, ropes and string which provide a rich and culturally layered foundation for the artwork. These specific materials are significant representing historical elements intrinsic to the Chinese cultural narrative which emphasise the complexity of these conflicting ideas.
Traditional Chinese ink calligraphy, combined with fabric and found objects, creates a visual tapestry that transcends time and place. The inclusion of Chinese calligraphy further enriches the artwork, acting as both a visual and linguistic element, deeply embedded in the cultural context. Text becomes distorted through the process of painting on banner like fabric forms alluding to notions of protest. Works also possess a sense of ritual disrupted.

Two layers make up the piece. White cotton with a faint sheen makes up the top layer. There is a layer of formal text content behind the white light cloth. The restrictions and family rules that have been a part of traditional Chinese families from the beginning to the present are the source of this material. The work is spread across four pages. The writing styles include cursive, oracle bone inscriptions, metal inscriptions, bamboo slips, and more.
